Most times, our choice of books is influneced by what people say about it, this is because they are our friends, and we trust them to a large extent. Well, you can call it WoW (Word of Mouth), but it works like magic. It is the reason why some authors would want book clubs to read their books and talk about it.

Some weeks ago, The Sages, one of the teams in Thinkerspool Book Club asked selected club members to share review of their best books with the online readers community. It was an interesting experience for all of us. Below are what they said about their favorite books.

Born a Crime

Author: Trevor Noah

Reviewer: Leonara Ifeanyichukwu

Born a crime by Trevor Noah is indeed a page Turner. I can confidently call it one of the best memoirs I’ve read. The book is not regular autobiography because it has a dash of humour, history and life changing lessons embedded in it.The book reveals the effect of racism in context to apartheid in South Africa, How colour segregation was used by the whites to control and subdue other racial groups in South Africa. And how disunity among the local tribes and tussle for supremacy led to thier own downfall and loss of countless lives. It also gives you an insight of the every day struggle of an average South African for survival. Finaly, born a crime present bits of South African culture to you. So if you are looking for an entertaining, educative and inspirational read, then Born a Crime is definitely your plug , because it presents all of these to you on platter.

As a Man Thinketh

Author: James Allen

Reviewer: Jimmy Umana

The book of Proverbs 23:7 was aptly transformed into a text, it is an in-depth analysis of the thoughts and actions of men that modifies their being. It brings to the fore the consequences of man’s inate decisions, beliefs, idiosyncrasies and takes it further. It’s short but quite compelling.

A Heart of Excellence

Author: Laurie Ellsworth

Reviewer: Ajala Jadesola

A heart of Excellence by Laurie Ellsworth is a book that talks about the relational, emotional, physical and spiritual aspect of the heart. It offers a checkup for the body, soul and mind. It has taught me how to devote my mind to what matters most.

The Secret

Author: Rhonda Byrne

Reviewer: Akinwale Oluwatosin Ayobami

This books talk really about the law of attraction and how we can use it to our benefit in all ramifications of life.. Why I want you to read this book is to understand the power of universe, and why you have to be careful of how you think and what you say.

Across the Gulf

Author: Dul Johnson

Reviewer: Dada Olayinka

This book reveals how war can alter the lives of those who experience it and that of their generation unborn. It shines light on the appalling nature of inter-ethnic crisis especially when fuelled by religion. It reminds the reader of the beauty in the culture and language of Africa. With issues socially relevant to the socio-political state of the country, it is a must-read for every Nigerian youth, most especially those with fantasies of war.

Gifted Hands

Author: Ben Carson

Reviewer: Obaeze Consolation

Gifted Hands is an autobiography of a famous neurosurgeon (and later politician) Ben Carson. With aptitude, he didn’t have much of a chance. Growing up in a broken home amongst poverty and prejudice, his grades suffered, his temper flared, and yet, his mom never lost her faith in him. Insisting he follow the opportunities she never had, she helped to grow his imagination, intelligence, and, most importantly, his belief in himself.

Why Brilliant People Believe Nonsense

Author: Cheie K. Miller and J. Steve Miller

He is an avid reader and a member of the best online book club in Nigeria
Reviewer: Ogunkunbi Gabriel

One of the few critical thinking books I’ve read that I found likeable, practical and thought-provoking. The book will qualify as a primer into the world of logical fallacies.

Why’s that important? Why should you read?

1. Well, you belong to a book club that makes you read a wide variety of books. You certainly don’t want to be consuming all those books hook, line and sinker without synthesising the contents properly.

2. You’re brilliant. Please don’t take my words for it. It could be nonsense:)

Brave New world

Author: Aldous Huxley

Rosemary is a nursing students that believe so much in better society, she is the welfare cordinator of Thinkerspool online book club in Nigeria
Reviewer: Oyinloye Rosemary

Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World details is a dystopia novel based on a utopian society that surprisingly has very close similarities with the present day. The heavy dependence on drugs to improve moods, genetic engineering practices, divisions between the social classes, and the struggle to maintain social stability all happens in present day and this novel was published in the 1930s.

The book was a bit confusing to follow at some point because of it’s structure, but overall, Brave New World does an excellent job of describing the implications of a near-perfect society and sheds light on the contrasts between two vastly different settings.

If you’re into classics, you’re surely going to enjoy this!

If you have read the reviews up to this point, we say thank you. However, you may want to watch the review video collections too.
